| Naples
            1815 This
is a nice bird's-eye view of the city from 1815, the year the Bourbons
returned to Naples after the Napoleonic Wars. In terms of map making,
the perspective is advanced: a direct view from the air. Note that the
western section of the city, along the sea (lower left on the map) is
still relatively undeveloped, being restricted to the Royal Gardens
(now the Villa Comunale) and a string of palatial
residences begun by the Spanish two centuries earlier. (The first in
that line of buildings may be seen in this
          entry.)
