Sir,
We are the Directors of The Casati Archives, the world's only information and picture library dedicated to the memory of the infamous Italian eccentric and patron of the arts, the Marchesa Luisa Casati (1881-1957).
We are also her official, family-authorized biographers and currently have published Infinite Variety: The Life and Legend of the Marchesa Casati (a full-length biography which has been published in English, French, Italian, German and Russian editions) as well as The Marchesa Casati: Portraits of a Muse, a deluxe art book containing over 200 images of the divine Marchesa and her world, published this past October.
We would like to state that the picture you claim is a painting of la Casati nude by Giovanni Boldini from 1905, is NOT a painting of the Marchesa.
Firstly, the Marchesa and Boldini did not meet until 1908, as substantiated in Boldini's letters. The very first portrait Boldini did of the Marchesa was that same year, a full-length of her dressed in black with a greyhound, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon in April 1909.
The second portrait Boldini did of the Marchesa is dated 1914, and shows her kneeling on a silver satin cushion surrounded by peacock feathers.
There is also a later portrait from 1923, unfinished, of Casati seated on a sofa with a dog in her lap.
Lost are two portraits, one of Casati in a large black hat and another of her in her gondola.
The painting you state is her nude, is listed in the two-volume book Opera Completa di Giovanni Boldini, published in 2002.
We suggest you consult this book, and change what is at your site.
Sincerely,
Scot D. Ryersson & Michael Orlando Yaccarino
